The Original Hollywood Owners
What happens when Hollywood’s fast-paced glamour gives way to a simpler, more fulfilling life? That’s the story behind our restaurant, a space steeped in local history, transformation, and love for community.
Mark and Ellie Gottwald were living the dream in Los Angeles. Mark, a rising chef at iconic places like Le Cirque and Spago, and Ellie, an actress appearing on shows like thirtysomething, were poised for big things. Ellie was even in line for roles alongside Tom Cruise and Madonna. But despite all their success, something was missing: peace of mind and time together.

The Turning Point
In 1991, everything changed. Mark was about to open a high-end restaurant in Beverly Hills when Ellie became pregnant, and the couple faced a decision—raise their family amidst the glitz of L.A. or choose a quieter, more grounded life closer to their roots. They chose the latter, moving east to be closer to family and the community they loved.
Ellie had been juggling a booming acting career, including prep for A League of Their Own, but the constant demand of location shoots was pulling her away from her true passions—her family and the simple joys of life. When Ellie left her Hollywood agent, she described it as a huge relief, likening the departure to “a divorce.”
Enter Vero Beach
Fate stepped in when the couple stumbled upon the opportunity to take over the historic Forty-One restaurant in Vero Beach. It wasn’t just any restaurant—it was a place with deep roots and history, and for Mark and Ellie, it felt like the perfect spot to start their next chapter. This community had welcomed them with open arms, giving them the sense of belonging they had been craving.
They threw their energy into transforming the space into what it is today—your home for fresh food, local stories, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The renovation was a labor of love: a wider dock, new paneling, a gorgeous bar, and live piano music to create the perfect ambiance. It became more than just a business—it became their heart and soul.

The Legacy Lives On
Mark and Ellie’s story, like that of the restaurant, is one of change, growth, and dedication. Their decision to leave behind the glitz of Hollywood and embrace life here in Vero Beach is something we cherish and want to share with every person who walks through our doors.
Today, our restaurant stands as a tribute to the Gottwalds’ vision—a place where family, community, and good food come together. We’re proud to continue the legacy they began, celebrating the rich history of this space and our connection to you, our neighbors.
